Write an essay about how Owens poetry describes the plight of the soldiers. In many of Wilfred Owens poems, he describes the suffering and the agony of the common soldier during war, not only on the battlefront, but he also describes the after-effects of war and its cruelty. Owens poetry is inclined towards and elegiac nature with the function to arouse grief and to stimulate remembrance. So I am Michael Angelo Javier – Martinez and I’m always ready to face all the challenges in my life. But first, I want to say something about me. I’m a freshman college student from Far Eastern University and taking up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Management. I’m friendly, naughty, talkative and responsible. Now, I want to share some challenges I encountered during I’m elementary student. I remember, when I was a elementary student, I’m one of the bullies but sometimes I was also bullied by my classmates who’s bigger than me. When I was in grade 1, most of the time I tease my classmates and they also tease me. After being a grade 1 student, Grade 2 was one of the worst experiences I had encountered in my life. Because I was bullied by a student who’s bigger than me. I remember I punched his face in front of his friends and after I punch him, he went home with a blood on his face. The following day, he went to school wearing an eye glasses. He said that it’s my fault because I punched him not only in her face also near the eyes so his eyes became blurry. When I’m already waiting for my service, he’s with his mother and he attacked me. His mother just watched me lying down with a blood on my eyebrows and I’m begging for help. But sadly, no one help me because others didn’t saw what’s happening and it’s near our school’s faà §ade so the guards didn’t saw it. At that time, I realize that I should be strong and I should be good so that I won’t experience any karma’s in life. So the following year, I because very strong and very brave. Also my dad enrolled me at MILO Basketball Training camp which held in Ateneo De Manila University. My cousins teased me because they said that I can’t shoot the ball properly. But I prove to them that I’m already brave and I can shoot the ball like my idols. First I failed but I keep on trying because I believed that practice makes perfect. Every morning I attend training in Pasig Catholic College and after my training, I go straight in Ateneo De Manila University to attend my MILO Basketball Training. Because of my hard work, I was chosen as a varsity player in Pasig Catholic College at the age of 9 years old. I was the youngest varsity player in that time. I played in PASAPRISA tournament held in Pasig and we became the champion. I’m very happy because it’s my first to participate in that tournament. After 4 months, I was chosen to represent our city and I’m very happy because it’s my opportunity to achieve my dreams. So I played in NCR Tournament held in Manila City but sad for us we loss. Out of 13 cities in NCR, we’re rank 5th place. But still I think know that in every game, there’s a loser and there’s a winner so I didn’t give up. I continue attending my basketball training. I attended a lot of training like NBA Jr, Alaska Training Camp, MILO Training Camp and many more. I was also chosen as a representative of our barangay and we played basketball against other barangays in Pasig City. I’m happy because I even we’re only in rank 3, I improved my skills and I became stronger and faster. After graduation in Elementary, I tried to have my training in Jose Rizal University. The coaches said to me I play good but I’m very young to represent their school. At that time, I’m sad because I want to achieve my dreams but I failed. So I didn’t stop trying. I continue having my training in Pasig Catholic College and I played in PRADA Tournament. We played against Ateneo De Manila University, De La Salle University, and many strong teams in NCR. Out of 20 teams, our team was ranked 8. The Shawshank Redemption Essay While all movies are made for entertainment value, some films are made with a deeper purpose or theme in mind. This is the case with The Shawshank Redemption, a film inspired by a Stephen King story, takes the viewer on a journey into the depths of human despair and investigates, through the characters, how the human spirit can stay strong even when something like jail tries to break it. The film also looks into what its like for an innocent man to be accused of murder, and how friendship can develop even in the most lonely of places. The relationship between Andy and Red is an interesting look at how people can connect in the midst of the worst situations, and how determination and strength can bring people through even the worst times.The Shawshank Redemption is a film portraying the life of Andy Dufresne, a banker who is hard working, successful and loves his wife. Andy comes home early from a business trip to find his wife in bed with another man, and contemplates murdering her. The next day, he is arrested for her murder, all the while swearing that he has been falsely accused. After being sent to a prison called Shawshank, Andy, who was a banker, ends up almost giving up on life until one day he solves a financial problem the guard captain is having, in return, Andy asks for a box of cold beers for some of his inmates. For himself he asks for nothing. Having found something meaningful to do once again, he starts taking some interest in life and develops a close friendship with an inmate called â€Å"Red.†Shortly after, knowledge of his abilities reach the ears of the warden who has Andy launder money for him and do all his personal banking; in return, Andy is given freedom in the prison and opens up a library. Several years pass and a young inmate is transferred to Shawshank; this inmate talks to Red about Andy’s crime for being in prison. They discuss a cell-mate who talked about how he committed the murder Andy is convicted of. When this n ews reaches Andy’s ears he is thrilled since he has now has some evidence to prove his innocence. Taking his new found evidence to the warden, Andy begs the warden to help him out, but the warden creates a situation where the new inmate is shot while trying to escape, shattering the last shred of hope Andy had of leaving Shawshank alive. The final scene in the movie shows Andy going to the bank and emptying out all the wardens’ personal funds and providing enough information to the police to convict the warden and other guards of crimes committed against inmates in Shawshank.As long as there is spirit and hope in men they can find reasons to live even in the worst situations. Such is the case with Andy who is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit.The director has brought reality to the screen and shows us a world that is brutal and unforgiving, while also using techniques of surprise and suspense to keep the viewer interested in the film throughout. I liked the depth of the role of Andy and the way Tim Robbins played it; his expressions, anger, hatred and determination bring his character to life in the film. There is an emotional connection that the audience has with Andy, and it grows stronger as the film progresses; he is as a nice person.   I like the irony in the movie, that Andy didn’t commit a crime but was charged with it because of the coincidental match with the murder weapon. What is also ironic is that he found his key to freedom in prison. The prison and the warden’s cruelty are unable to break Andy’s spirit. His dedication to teaching other people and giving them hope for a successful life after parole shines through in his character and in the actor’s performance. He found a reason to live, a reason to go on with his life. The last scene of Andy’s escape from the prison is a big and unexpected surprise since the director made the audience believe that Andy had committed suicide. The tunne l was a great idea and the fact that it took him over 15 years to make it is amazing and reflects his patience and dedication. Andy had the tunnel ready but was emotionally attached to his some of his inmate friends especially â€Å"Red†. Overall, the film depicts the brutality of prison life through the language, clothing, and actions of the characters, creating a realistic picture.In a review by Vince Leo, Shawshank Redemption is called â€Å"professional in every way†. Leo mentions that the film is so appealing that the audience would think that â€Å"only an acclaimed director with 30 years of experience could have even come close to achieving the heights to which Shawshank attains.† Leo continues to appreciate the role of Andy Dufresne, that prison life is not able to â€Å"kill his spirit, his hope, his dreams, or his talents†. There is also a mystery movie that is unraveled gradually, â€Å"creating an atmosphere of mystique that never wears offâ € . Leo also appreciates the music that is played in the background and how the music director â€Å"chooses the right times for the right pieces of music†. Changes Andy came in alone and was alone for a while until he started gaining respect and soon became a well respected manthat everyone turned to. When he escaped no one could belive it because he was really well educated and no one thought he would do such a thing. Andy soon was know at the prison and cool with most people. Red was really the same throught the story and was that he was a really patient and a serious type of guy when he started telling us about him he was already the man that could get anything but I belive that that was not the way when he first came into the prison. At the end when he got the letter he was still the same old Red. Person versus society Again it is all about society and the way people treated him. One example was when he was convicted people said that he was guilty because he did not make a big scean and he took it like a man so thats why people said that he was guilty but he wasnt . Another one was that there was the conflict with the inmates at first that they didnt like Andy so they made his life imposible the first couple of months. One main thing was with the sisters about his man hood even though that was a storgle those were some of the really main conflicts with society. Person VS Person Warden was the one who was making Andys life miserable at the end and new the truth. But still didnt want to let him go and fought till the end. Warden made any do all the work and that was why Warden didnt wan to let him go because he knew that if he was to let Andy go he was going to lose a lot of money and that was one thing he was not willing to lose. The sisters wanted to get Andy and make him their female and like I said it was a very difficult situation for Andy but still it was a struggle and it was a really bad conflict person versus person sort of situation but at the end Andy got them back for all the beatings that he got from the sisters. Andy never gave up in searching for his freedom and fighting what ever was going to be a startle for him. He honored a new friend ship that was red some one that was helping him through out ten years of his life. He really trusted Red in every way that you can possibly imagine .Red also trusted him even though Andy always beat around the bush when it came to saying things you sort of had to guess what he was trying to say. Red was patient because after thirty years they the people who wok at the prison finally gave him his parole. Still they thought he was not rehabilitated. He learned how to survive by being the man and by being the guy who could get anything, and making side money for himself. The main point of the story is that even though Andy was a really quiet guy he was always doing some thing that no one knew and that was planning his escape. After ten years of pain and suffering he finally does it and does every thing he said he was going to do which was own his own business and be rich wit his good friend by his side which was Red. Andy’s status at the prison grew, as his position as helped to the warden and other guards not only made him popular with them, but he was able to use his leverage to convince the warden to build a library.   With no funding allotted, Andy was forced to write letters to the state requesting resources.   After years of trying, the finally send Andy some books and a letter kindly asking that he stop sending letters.   Urged on by this success, Andy begins writing even more letters asking for even more assistance from the state.   This again shows Andy’s refusal to give and his habit of always persevering in spite of terrible odds and strong opposition.   From the time he brings up the library to the warden, who discourages his effort but allows it, to the continuous rejection letters he receives constantly from the state, Andy’s perseverance shows that he never gives up hope.   His attitude is apparent when the warden tells him about the futility of his efforts and how long it will take, he states that all he has is time.   He realizes that he can still control his life while in prison, even better in some aspects than his former life, in which his wife not only cheated but was murdered and he the one blamed.   While life dealt Andy a series of cruel blows, he continued to persevere and Andy ends up building a large prison library, sets up study programs for inmates, and continues to lead a life as an educated and respected man.   And, while Andy appears to have everything together, he can never ignore not truly having his freedom. One of the earliest interactions that turn Andy and Red into friends is when Andy wants to get a rock hammer to continue his appreciation of rocks.   Agreeing to secure it for Andy, once seeing the hammer, Red comments about how it would take centuries to dig out of prison with it.   When talking to Red, Andy once again remarks about having nothing but time to pursue such interests as rocks, and Red notices that Andy is indeed free from the psychological shackles Shawshank, even if he cannot escape the physical shackles.   When a young inmate later learns that Andy was innocent of the crime for which he was convicted, that man’s murder by the warden and Captain Hadley is simply too much for him to bear and he seems near his breaking point, with suicide a real possibility.   Red worries that his friend will kill himself, but instead Andy finally escapes Shawshank.   The viewer later finds out that Andy discovered that he could chisel away at the wall with his rock ham mer, all under the protection of a large poster on the wall, originally Rita Hayworth. Education in Bolivia for the past 50 years Essay

In the year 1989, education in Bolivia was not considered as a right by many people. However, it was observed as a means to control the lives of the masses by the ruling sector. The government restricted the release of funds to education because it gave more attention in other branches of the society. As a result, the illiteracy rate was very high. A country which has 13-14% illiteracy rate, Bolivia is regarded as the worst in the South Americas. The Bolivian government allocates 23% of its yearly budget to education which is actually the highest percentage in South American countries despite of its small budget. However, this did not help improve the literacy level of the country as a whole. According to the Bolivian National Statistics Institute in 2002, the rate of absolute literacy level is about 20%, functional literacy rate is about 35%, with totality of 55% only. There are about 11. 8% literacy rate in men were proven and this increases to a relatively high 27. 7% for women (Carlos Santander-Maturana, 2007). Nowadays, the absentee rate is very high learner for children in the primary school from six to eight years. It is comparably lower on children aged nine, but increases significantly when on children aged 12 (Santander-Maturana, C. 2007). A very familiar explanation for this growing dilemma is that the majority poor families, which comprise the leading portion in the Bolivian people, force their kids to stop from going to school in order to help their parents increase the family income. Similar thing is true to the other students who are in the secondary and tertiary level as is confirmed in Country Studies (2007): Only 1/3 of the first graders completed the 5th grade, 20% started secondary school, 5% began their postsecondary studies, and just 1% received a university degree. As years go by, parents of poor families started seeing education as a means to save them and their future generation from poverty. But as a family strives hard for survival, problems will always remain as problems no matter how they manage to resolve them. The current economic condition of the family is one of the many causes of their being illiterate. As of now, the literacy condition is getting more and more improved because people are paying much attention in education more than they did before. The government is also in support of the projects to make education better. Many programs are now laid out and are being implemented to secure the future of the country. The Bolivian style of education compared side by side with the United States’ is quite similar in a few ways. As what is stated in Encyclopedia Britannica (2007): Primary education for children 6 to 13 years of age is free and officially compulsory, although school attendance is difficult to enforce in some areas. Secondary education, lasting up to 4 years, is not compulsory. Most education is state-supported, but private institutions are permitted (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2007). Education in the United States is funded mainly by the government in three levels: federal, state, and local. Primary education, which starts from 5-6 years old and secondary education are both compulsory. College education is still an option because there are still vocational and technical courses being offered by the state. Reading literacy rate in the US is as high as 98% being recognized as one of the best reading literacy all over the world.

Tropical fish by Doreen Baingana is a collection of linked short stories which was published in 2005. In this writing, we will be discussing on the novel and a critical review of the novel paying more attention to the novels context, theme, style and ideology. Doreen Baingana grow up in Entebbe, Uganda, and now divided her time between Uganda and the United States her bood, Tropical fish won the 2006 common wealth writers prize, best first bood, Africa, and an AWP short fiction award. She graduated from Makerere university with a JD, and from the university of Maryland with an MFA while at Makerere university Baingana was an active member of FEMRITE-Uganda Women Writer Association, which she has referred to as â€Å"a literary home of sorts†. Tropical fish by Doreen Baingana is a collection if eight linked short stories about three sister- Patti, Rosa, and Christine- as they journey through life in the town of Entebbe, Uganda. The story is a bildungsroman. With the exception of lost in in Los Angeles, all eight stories are set in Uganda and they all deal with the choice they made and where it led them even though the story was set in the period after Idi Amin’s misrule abd the deterioration that was impossible itself on the country, politics was never the object, except in some places where references are made to it such as when an ex all-european school was left to deteriorate and the seventy-two hours ultimatum given to the idians in Uganda to leave. The story begins with Green stones as the youngest of the three daughters admires her mother’s jewellery purchased by her husband anytime he arrives from the numerous fraves. The title story Tropical Fish is the story of Christine, before she left for the US, and her newly found boyfriend, peter, an expatriate who exports tropical fish. The story is about the high-risk teenage life of sex, drinking and abortion. Peter and Christine met the dated almost instantly. They started having sex in peter’s huge white house located in a plush hill top residential area –christine got pregnant but would not tell peter because he might think she wants his money. Doreen Baingana’s Tropical fish works to undercut monolithic nations of Africa female experience of womanhood. The writer consciously writes against the stereotype of Africa woman as victim. Baingana’s shot stories linked three sisters, forming a family that is stronger than its individuals parts, providing a variety of perspectives on growing up African, Ugandan and relatively privileged. This form and narrative technique is a departure from traditional, postcolonial women’s coming of age, in that it provides the perspectives of three very different young women at different developmental stages. In this way, Tropical fish works to undercut monolithic notions of Africa female experience of womanhood. Baingana provides a textured and complex picture of middle-class African womanhood within a specific urban location. As the children of government buveaucrats, the three sisters attend the best schools in Entebbe, are sent to prestigious private boarding schools, and are part of the elite at Makerere University. In the words of rosa, one of the sisters, the girls are. The cream of the crop. â€Å"hunger† is also written from oldest sister The writer Doreen Baingana also focused on the minutiae of the girl’s lives, rather than larger political themes in the volatile period after Idi Amin’s dictatorship, is a strategic choice the story demonstrates the ways in which ordinary people go about living their lives, sun living political repressions and economic decline. In today’s society, the parents are only permitted in the initial dating/courtship experience and marriage occasion. Therefore, when the author offers tactics and expectations of how the men should date women, then it reflects a society that perceives women as mechanical rather than emotional beings. These is why young people prefer getting advice and dating tactics from such books rather from their parents who would offer them a more respectful approach to the issue than the one given in the story. In a way, the book portrays that a woman’s character and actions are determined by the birth or residential location. Although this is quite general, it has some truth in it. Individuals in the American society are less conservative as compared to the Spanish society. Upholding chastity up to the marriage level is highly advocated within the Spanish community due to religious (Catholics) inclinations. In combination with other cultural practices like the influence of godparents and the extended family on a child’s growth, the Spanish girl and the American girl cannot be compared. It is significant to note that young people are not very keen on authors or film producer/scriptwriter. All they care about is the content in terms of practicality and interest levels. Authors and the media are only guided by sales and keeping an audience attracted towards attaining larger followers. In most circumstances, the more the popular sells, the more appropriate it becomes for the media in terms of monetary inflows. Thus, the values and lessons gotten from these works mold a majority of people in the society. Communities present in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries did not evidence a high significance of influence from foreign societies (Howell and Jenny 65). This is why societal members molded their ways in accordance to what surrounded them. Literature and media works within the given periods were educative and those that offered information outside the norm were regarded as immaterial and thus could not be permitted in the society. In this essay, I will analyze the importance and the impact of mass media in contemporary society, presenting both their positive and negative effects, in terms of the roles they play. I will start by presenting the advantages of the informative and interpretative functions (which are essential in a society dependant on mass media for information), while also mentioning their negative effects, by referring to the manipulation of public opinion and the using of media as a medium of propaganda. I will continue by discussing the presence of infotainment and its benefits, but also the educative role of mass media, nevertheless without ignoring the negative aspects which come with access to information for a population segment which does not have the ability to select and process it. I will not miss the opp ortunity of speaking about the social binder (between people or civilizations) function, and also about the tendency of the population of aligning to opinion streams; I will close by presenting some limiting factors for the mass media power. Most people get informed by means of press and television, these channels satisfying, by the information they provide, a fundamental need of the modern man information. Furthermore, by their dimensions, mass media facilitate spreading the information and increase the speed by which a message is relayed. The continuous worldwide information flow helps individuals find the latest news which may influence their decisions, coordinate their businesses, help them know which areas are or will be affected by natural disasters or conflicts in order to avoid them and so on. Still, many times, the media offer more than information. By means of media, one can influence, orient and direct public opinion, interests and motivations, consciences, even beyond ones own will. Mass media may lead even unto the destruction of the discernment and the creation of an apathy, it may destroy the will to understand and act. American mass media theorists, Lazarsfeld and Merton (1948), have argued that we may b e guilty of paying such close attention to the information with which the media bombard us, thus getting to confuse knowing about social problems with doing something about them. They called this confusion the narcotizing dysfunction, linking it to the social consequences of mass media. Individuals replace reality with a surrogate of reality. Furthermore, people can be misinformed through mass media. Many times, we read untrue articles in newspapers and magazines, whether these articles are about what is happening around the world or about important persons in social life. The media build but also destroy reputations, which happens most of the times in politics. A good example, according to Layborn (2002), are the scandals surrounding the Secretary of State for War, John Profumo (1963) and the Liberal Party leader Jeremy Thorpe (1970s). Politicians are presented, launched to the public with the same techniques used in launching a new brand of toothpaste or soap. Pop stars, as a clas s, are the creation of media. Remaining in the area of negative aspects, I can also include the fact that mass media create cognitive, affective and behavioural addictions. These addictions lead to a certain level of defiance which aggravates the cognitive gulf. Those who are informed become more and more informed and those who are misinformed remain misinformed. As to the interpretative function, this is somewhat related to the informative role, because it supposes the acceptance of the information by the individual without processing it through ones own reason. The contents of communications are generated by the publics needs, so the information will be processed enough to satisfy these needs. Information consumers may also receive direct help in interpreting some events by the means of editorials or comments in newspapers and magazines. Thus, the reader or viewer not only received the information in the state it was conceived, they are also given the manner in which they should regard and understand that information. The press relies on the authority of the written word, while television relies on the fact that images seem authentic and the citizen tends to say, most of the times I have seen it with my own eyes, not realizing that they have actually only seen what others wanted them to see. The media cease to be a news organ and become an instrument of propaganda. In all societies and in whoevers service it may be, propaganda aims to shape certain attitudes and impose social stereotypes, it tends to impose conditions on the individual, by creating automate mechanisms with the purpose of controlling and manipulating behaviour or society (voting for a certain political party, purchasing certain goods, etc). Great leaders of all times have used manipulation techniques, some of them to keep their power, others to control population. Even Napoleon had paid attention to the means of information at that time, which have offered him advantages before his enemies. His statements remained famous: Four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets. World War I is considered to have been a propagandist battle between the English and the Germans and that the American audience was the target of messages in pamphlets, posters and other means of communication. Durin g World War II, the Nazi have developed an elaborate propaganda system in order to obtain regime support both in Germany and abroad. It is one of the convictions of Media Lens that the corporate mass media constitute a propaganda system for elite interests (Edwards and Cromwell, 2006). Those who have high social positions, govern or lead large institutions have control on the media (or even own it, as it is the case for the Italian prime-minister Berlusconi), using them to manipulate population with the purpose of meeting their own interests. The renowned professor Chomsky (2003) implements The Propaganda Model in the case of the Iraq war as well. Large corporations, among which Haliburton or British Petroleum, have used the mass media in order to internationally spread false information on Saddam Hussein, such as him producing mass destruction weapons and supporting terrorism, information which later proved to be untrue. The population, being scared by the artificially created real ity, has eventually joined in, by sustaining the war in Iraq and, indirectly, the interests of the great moguls. New York Times revealed (1st December, 2005) that the USA had used black propaganda by paying Iraqi journalists to translate and publish in local newspapers articles written in the US by a public relations company financed by the Pentagon. Furthermore, after investigations were lead, false journalists providing news articled to the BBC were discovered. False information was broadcast by television, while the journalists were secretly working for organizations sustained by the British Ministry of Defence in a propaganda operation (Media Lens, 2005). As to its entertainment function, the mass media, especially television, offer the cheapest and most accessible means of entertainment, compared to attending concerts and shows. A few minutes of ones favourite show can relax, make one forget the hard time they are going through. The internet is a good mean of entertainment through its multitude of online games, music, the possibility of interactive communication with friends. One of the researchers of the contemporary phenomenon of media, Claude-Jean Bertrand (2000), notes that most of consumers search for entertainment in the mass media. Thus, most means of communications provide it, even newspapers. This function plays a particularly important part in todays society, even more that it combines extremely efficiently with the others. Vicky Hay (1990) considers that the challenge of infotainment development in television, with its various kinds and media formats (talk-shows, contests, games, interactive transmissions, etc) represent t he main cause of cultivating this tendency in the written press as well. The second cause is money, respectively in an industry such as the media one, which operates on a competitive market, where it is all about maintaining/gaining/regaining a larger audience segment, which brings in itself publicity, money that is. But there is also a negative aspect in the entertainment function of mass media, which is the risk of relaying obscene or negative messages through music or violent movies, or by (even involuntarily) creating false, bad models for the public which is exposed, but has no ability to select or process information, such as children. The audiovisual channel continuously dimensions the knowledge universe of the receivers, by influencing and inducing them values, conceptions, convictions, stereotypes, etc. That is why the educative role that the media have in society has an importance that should not be underestimated; the large spectrum of TV channels, from the most various domains, constitutes an important source of broadening ones knowledge horizon. Also, television can be a culture broadcaster, thus concerts/theatre plays gathering more viewers than spectators. Documentaries, homage evocations of personalities, flashbacks have more power than books do in refreshing the publics awareness on a personality or even on history, in general. But, as a negative effect of the educative function, we must mention that television, as a time devourer, has brought a real reading crisis, television shows meeting the cultural needs of a mankind too rushed to be able to focus on traditional means. Also, in countries with a redu ced cinematographic production, flooding the market with foreign commercial productions may lead to the cultural denationalization of the audience. Individuals who share the dominant point of view easily share it, while individuals who do not share this opinion enclose themselves in silence, for fear of isolation. Thus, public opinion represents, from this perspective, the opinion that can be expressed publicly without the risk of isolation. A secondary function of mass media, that of reinforcing social norms, is achieved through the fact that television exposes any deviation from these norms to the judgment of public opinion. According to DeFleur (1989), the individual behaviour is guided by ones perception on cultural norms. Thus, by the means of presentation, underscoring and selection, television reinforces the viewers opinions on these cultural norms. Television also has a massive impact in imposing fashion and the feminine or masculine beauty type. One of the moments which brought glory to the mass media is the Watergate Process, journalists being the ones who caused the resignation of the American president Nixon on August 8th, 1974, thus gaining the fame of fourth power in the state. The death of princess Diana has again given television the opportunity of showing its advantages in catching public interest and transforming an event into an international tragedy. Still, there are limits to the power the mass media has, opponent forces whether political, institutional, or representing the private business environment which, at their turn, manipulate the information the press offers. Also, the commercial pressure of profit and competition, as well as direct pressure from political institutions or even peoples scepticism limit the power of mass media. What are the conclusions that can be drawn from these aspects we have presented? The mass media are a double-edged tool. On the one hand, they form and on the other they deform. In a post-industrial society where information reaches the same value as capital or resources, using means of information and communication such as mass media becomes a necessity. Nevertheless, I consider that the mass media are both a positive image and a negative image creator, a source of information as well as a tool of propaganda, a sine qua non of modern society.

Good and Evil in Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne In â€Å"Young Goodman Brown,† there is a fight between good and evil with one main character being torn between the two sides and every other character seemingly on one side or the other through the reader’s view, although many characters do deceive Goodman Brown about whether they are good or evil. This fight between the two sides and the deception that causes confusion for Goodman Brown is the source of tension throughout the entire story. In â€Å"Young Goodman Brown,† every character’s traits and dialogue, the setting, and even colors mentioned have double meanings and are symbolic to the main binary oppositions of either good or evil. In the beginning of the story, Young Goodman Brown â€Å"crosses the threshold† of his home, leaving his Faith, whom he calls his â€Å"angel on earth† and traveling on a journey into the dark night (page 2186). Right away the reader sees that Faith is symbolic of goodness, although she does wear pink ribbons, a mixture of white and red that symbolizes purity and sexuality, but these are worn in the confines of her marriage, causing the reader to view the pink as being sacred. The journey Goodman Brown is taking is opposite of everything that Faith stands for and immediately appears to be ominous when good Faith begs him to stay with â€Å"trouble in her face, as if a dream had warned her what work is to be done tonight† (2187). Goodman Brown knows that he is leaving for an â€Å"evil purpose,† but feels justified in doing so because â€Å"after this one night [he’ll] cling to [Faith’s] skirts and follow her to Heaven,† as if hi s association with Faith, who represents goodness, will save him and allow him to enter into Heaven even if he enters into the si... ...odman Brown is forever changed by the revealing of the true deceptive nature of his fellow Christians that night. Everything and everyone he believed in is now viewed as evil, not good. His own worship in church is drowned by â€Å"an anthem of sin [that] rushed loudly upon his ear and drowned the blessed strain† of his song (2195). The key fact is that Goodman Brown let the evil images and people take his Faith away, but he never stops being â€Å"followed by Faith,† even when she is â€Å"an aged woman† and he is â€Å"borne to his grave† (2195). He stops loving and living by his Faith, but she never stops loving and living by him. Evil overtakes Goodman Brown, making his dying hour gloom, but Faith remains in the end.
